Anime Music Videos

I enjoy many different kinds of songs, from the hard sounds of Nine Inch Nails to the soft melodies of Eric Clapton. I also enjoy Japanese animation, commonly known as "anime", and it wasn't long before I decided to combine the two into a few videos. The songs for which I create these videos either did not have a music video, or simply did not have a video appropriate to the lyrics. So, I've made my own. Each one comes with a short description about its creation and design, along with any warnings that should be heeded. I hope you enjoy watching them as much as I enjoyed making them.

"No Need for Polka"
Created Aug. 30, 2001
video used:
Tenchi Muyo OAV series
song used:
"Polka Your Eyes Out" by "Wierd Al" Yankovic
total video length:
3 m 49 s
Warnings:
brief nudity, cartoon violence
To create this video I used a Win98 system, implementing the following freeware programs: SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, AVI Edit, and VirtualDub. I also used Creative Labs' Wave Studio to section the audio for each video segment. I pulled the video from the "Tenchi Muyo: Ultimate Collection" box set. The audio file was grabbed from "Weird Al's Greatest Hits: Vol. 2". The whole thing took about 38 hours to create, including the few hours it took to rip and encode the files, during which the computer did all the work Look for the few moments of lip sync by Ryoko (young lady with spiky blue hair) and the "doo-doo-doo brothers", and keep watch for Tenchi's yodeling father.

"Nightmare Box"
Created Sept. 2, 2001
video used:
Nightmare Campus: A Total Nightmare
song used:
"Stomp Box" by They Might Be Giants
total video length:
1 m 50 s
Warnings:
extremely graphic violence, disturbing images
This is my second video, which was created using the same equipment as before (Win98, DVD rippers, and freeware). I attempted to sync up the music with this song, as I neglected to do so on the last video. I also put more effort into the pace of the video clips, and this time it looks more appropriate to the beat of the music.
Nightmare Campus is a part of the "erotic horror" genre of anime, which means that there is both graphic violence and graphic sexual situations. This video contains none of the graphic sexual scenes from the Nightmare Campus DVD, but it does have several very violent images. This, combined with the hectic tone to the song, makes for a somewhat disturbing music video. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
As I prepared a transcript of the lyrics beforehand (along with some noteworthy musical riffs), I was able to more easily determine the appropriate scenes to use. The total time to create was about 11 hours, much less than my previous work, "No Need for Polka".

"Vampire Hunter Rising"
Created Nov. 30, 2001
video used:
Vampire Hunter D
song used:
"Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revival
total video length:
2 m 16 s
Warnings:
graphic violence, vampires
This is my third video, once again using the same equipment and software. I had recently seen the highly acclaimed anime film "Vampire Hunter D", and felt that some sort of homage should be made. I felt that a somewhat satirical video should be made, as parody is one of the highest forms of flattery. And what song could be more appropriate for the purpose than "Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
I'm honestly not certain exactly how many hours it took me to compile the video, but it did take me only one day to begin and finish. This video also has scenes of violence, but not to the extent of the "Nightmare Box" video. There are also scenes of vampires attacking damsels in distress, and evil witches who transform into giant snakes. Viewer discretion is advised, but anyone who can watch prime time TV should be able to watch this.
